HEALTHY STRESS-RELIEF TECHNIQUE FOR MEN: CUT BACK ON ALCOHOL & TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE
By Nicole Prentice
If you've ever found yourself reaching for a drink at the end of a stressful day, know that you're not alone. For many men, alcohol serves as a coping mechanism and a quick escape, but it often causes more harm than good.
Have you ever wondered why it's so difficult to break this habit?
In this article, I will explore why we often turn to alcohol to unwind and introduce a powerful tool you can use instead!
Your body's "fight-or-flight" stress response is designed to protect you from perceived threats. In the caveman era, this response helped our ancestors mobilize for survival, whether that meant finding food or escaping from a predator.
However, in modern times, this system is constantly triggered by everyday stressors like career demands, financial pressures, traffic, difficult conversations, and family expectations. While most of these events are not life-threatening, they still activate your "fight-or-flight" response.
As a result, many people experience chronic stress. By the end of the day, your nervous system may still be in overdrive, making relaxation feel out of reach.
Alcohol offers temporary relief by numbing your emotions and helping you "shut off" after a long day. Although it feels like a quick fix, in the long run, it can create more harm than good — mentally, physically, and emotionally — because it doesn't address the root cause of your stress.
Over time, this habit can become an unhealthy crutch, making it harder to cope with life's challenges in healthy, productive ways.
The good news is that there are simple techniques you can use to relieve stress without resorting to alcohol. These methods can help shift your nervous system from the "fight-or-flight" state (sympathetic nervous system) to a "rest-and-digest" state (parasympathetic nervous system).
When you're in the "rest-and-digest" state, you experience feelings of calmness, peace, creativity, clarity, and enjoy socializing, among other benefits.
One of the most effective tools I've utilized in my journey, as well as with private clients, to activate my parasympathetic nervous system is breathwork.
Breathwork involves intentionally changing the depth and rate of your breath for a specific amount of time to help regulate your nervous system, reduce anxiety, and promote relaxation— all within minutes.
Unlike alcohol, which suppresses your emotions, breathwork helps you process them. It's a sustainable and healthy way to reset after a demanding day.
If you're tired of relying on alcohol to cope with stress and are eager to adopt healthier techniques to unwind, try this simple stress-reduction method called "Pursed Lip Breathing."
Step 1: Inhale through your nose for two seconds (your stomach should rise during the inhale).
Step 2: Exhale through your mouth with pursed lips for four seconds. Picture yourself breathing into a straw. (Your stomach should fall during the exhale).
Step 3: Repeat until you feel more relaxed and calm.
Pursed Lip Breathing is an easy yet powerful technique for calming your nervous system and reducing stress and anxiety without reaching for a drink!
