The Real Truth About "Manning-Up"

Crying, ignoring your emotions, and avoiding difficult questions that delve into deeper issues are all common experiences; every person has gone through these moments. However, as men, we often hear the phrase "man up" as a societal expectation. This phrase used to have a positive meaning, referring to rallying a group for a shared purpose; but now, it has become a derogatory remark, implying that men should overcome their fears, pains, and uncertainties without seeking support.


This article aims to shed light on the various issues, stigmas, and shocking statistics surrounding men's mental health. I want to be frank with you; I won't sugarcoat this issue because men's mental health is critical and often overlooked. Behind the facade of strength and resilience, there lies a vulnerability that must be acknowledged and addressed. I will also highlight how men can start by paying attention to 8 specific areas to enhance their overall wellness; these areas revolve around four key pillars that contribute to their optimal health.

Journey of a soldier in combat

As a disabled combat veteran diagnosed with combat-related PTSD, I have personally experienced the hardships of being a man dealing with mental health and substance abuse issues. I have also witnessed friends and peers tragically succumb to mental health challenges, including suicide, and the strain it puts on relationships. Through my time in the military, federal law enforcement, and volunteer search and rescue, I have gained firsthand insight into the challenges faced by many communities, regardless of gender.

I've recognized that the traumas and burnout in our personal and professional lives contribute to the mental health issues we see. This article doesn't specifically focus on the veteran and first responder communities; rather, it highlights how men deal with unrealistic societal expectations that lead to burnout and trauma.

One significant concern is the underreporting of mental health issues among men. Current societal expectations discourage men from seeking help for their mental health problems, where the term "manning up" plays a role, passed down through generations. Stigma surrounding mental health remains a primary concern, too; it leads to a reluctance in seeking treatment. Limited access to and resources for mental health services, especially in rural areas, further hinder men from getting the help they need. As a result, men often try to cope with their struggles alone, leading to a lack of diagnosis, treatment, and an increase in suicide.

When we discuss the importance of a male figure in a family and how the stress of not being present places hardships on relationships and children, we can see the downward spiraling effect caused by the expectations of masculinity. It's no surprise that we're witnessing increased levels of suicide among men globally. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 75% of all suicides worldwide are committed by men; this alarming figure emphasizes the higher prevalence of suicide among males and the urgent need for action. Men are also more likely to commit suicide that is more violent.

Substance abuse is another major issue affecting men's mental health. Men are more vulnerable than women to overdose deaths involving opioid and stimulant drugs; reports indicate higher rates of alcohol and drug-related disorders among men. Unfortunately, men often turn to substance abuse as a way to cope, worsening their mental health challenges. I personally experienced this when I avoided my own mental health challenges, leading to the loss of my career in federal law enforcement.

Workplace stress also significantly impacts men's mental health. The pressure to be the primary breadwinner, coupled with high levels of stress in jobs influenced by societal expectations, takes a toll; this is especially true for first responders and military veterans who regularly face trauma. The reluctance to seek support or take time off work for mental health reasons can have detrimental effects on businesses and mission goals.

When we address men's mental health, we're talking about multiple generations. From boomers to Gen Z, we live in a time with the largest workforce ever recorded that spans a wide range of ages. With this in mind, it's important to create accessible and gender-sensitive mental health resources tailored to men's needs. By understanding the scope and impact of the statistics, we can develop effective prevention strategies, support networks, and accessible mental health services. It's crucial to create a world where men feel comfortable seeking help and where their mental health is valued and prioritized; breaking the silence and raising awareness, vulnerability, and transparency are key to changing our societal thoughts and perceptions of men.

So, what can be done to address these issues? First, we must challenge the stigma associated with men seeking help for mental health problems; there's no such thing as "manning up" anymore. Open conversations about mental health and promoting help-seeking behavior are crucial. It's important to create accessible and gender-sensitive mental health resources tailored to men's needs that create supportive environments in the workplace. Prioritizing mental health, implementing work-life balance policies, and reducing stigmas can make a significant difference here; this will raise awareness and foster a culture of support and understanding that empowers men to prioritize their mental well-being.

8 Key Areas for

Men’s Holistic Wellness

On a personal level, it is important for men to prioritize their individual well-being and self-awareness. As someone who is involved in entrepreneurship, outdoor education, and professional wellness coaching, I focus on four key areas that address holistic wellness: fitness, nutrition, attitude, and environment. By breaking down these areas, we can identify eight specific aspects that can help us overcome stigmas and address our mental health comprehensively:

  1. Mind-body connection

    Understand the connection between our mind and body, and how physical movement can positively impact our mental well-being; it is crucial to create a plan that outlines specific wellness goals and the steps needed to achieve them. Seeking professional assistance may be necessary in this process.

  2. Healthy eating habits

    Adopt healthier eating habits; the significance of maintaining a balanced diet for overall well-being cannot be overstated. What we consume, both mentally and physically, has a direct impact on our physical and mental health.

  3. Fitness and exercise

    Fitness and exercise also play a significant role; engaging in various types of physical activities that enhance strength, endurance, and flexibility offers opportunities for personal growth and resilience building.

  4. Exploring the outdoors

    Exploring the outdoors and participating in different activities not only promotes physical and mental well-being but also allows us to connect with something greater than ourselves; this connection with nature adds a spiritual dimension that provides valuable perspective to our lives.

  5. Mindfulness and stress management

    Mindfulness and stress management techniques are another area that requires our attention. Focusing on a single task and allowing our minds to heal through meditation can be truly transformative; the best part is that it only requires a few minutes each day, and it is something we can do privately, without needing to share it with anyone. Recognizing the benefits of this practice is important.

  6. Resilience and overcoming challenges

    Developing resilience and overcoming challenges is another aspect that men should focus on. All the aforementioned areas, such as outdoor activities, exercise, goal-setting, and understanding the mind-body connection, contribute to building strategies for resilience; mindfulness and stress management techniques provide a perspective that enables us to focus on opportunities rather than obstacles.

  7. Supportive environment

    Creating and participating in a supportive environment is crucial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle; this can involve seeking the guidance of a coach, therapist, or counselor, or joining a men's mental health group where we can meet regularly to discuss the challenges and societal expectations placed on men. Group outings in different settings can also provide opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals and openly share our experiences.

  8. Sustainability and environmental awareness

    Lastly, incorporating sustainability and environmental awareness is important. As inhabitants of this world, it is essential for us to respect and actively participate in the communities we share with other living beings; this mindset allows us to appreciate something greater than ourselves and engage more deeply with our local community. The concept is about taking care of ourselves so that we can better support others; if we isolate ourselves from our community, we become trapped in our own thoughts. It is important to actively participate in something larger than ourselves by getting involved and making a positive impact.

It is evident that men's mental health is a critical issue that needs to be addressed. The societal expectations placed on men, coupled with the stigma surrounding mental health, have led to alarming statistics and devastating consequences; however, there is hope for change.

It is time to challenge the outdated notion of "manning up" and encourage open conversations about mental health. As you embark on your journey towards better mental health, remember the words of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who has openly addressed his own struggles:

"It's okay to not be okay; it's okay to ask for help."

Support is not a sign of weakness but a courageous step towards healing and growth.

I challenge you to prioritize your well-being, both individually and collectively. Strive to understand the mind-body connection and adopt healthier habits into your life. By doing so, you'll break free from the shackles of society and pave the way for a world where men's mental health is valued and prioritized by everyone.
